Extreme Weather Procedure

The Department promotes positive and inclusive school communities where all members feel safe and are safe.  On days of extreme weather conditions, the following steps are to be followed:

Recess

An announcement will be made over the PA prior to recess to confirm Extreme Weather Policy.

  • Students can go outside but must stay undercover at all times.
  • Permitted areas are the verandahs and undercover area in all buildings.
  • Teachers may wish to stay in their classroom with their students and just have a quick toilet and drink break.
  • Duty teachers continue as per roster with the oval teacher and Leadership Team assisting in congested areas, i.e. undercover area. The oval duty teacher must be on duty on the verandah area outside rooms 17, 18 and 19, which will be available if weather permits; otherwise the oval duty teacher will assist in other duty areas as required and students will be moved to other sheltered areas.
  • Duty teachers should encourage students to conduct a quiet activity on verandahs and Undercover Area and not run around.

Lunch

An announcement will be made over the PA prior to Lunchtime to confirm Extreme Weather Policy.

  • 50 – 1.00pm, students eat lunch under duty teacher supervision
  • on the verandah by rooms 9, 10 and 11 (Year 1-2)
  • in the undercover area (Year 3-4)
  • on the verandah by Rooms 17, 18 and 19 (Year 5-6)
  • Teachers may wish to stay in their classroom with their students if they are not on duty.

In very severe weather, it will be announced that students eat lunch in their rooms under teacher supervision.

  • 1.00-1.30 Duty Areas
    • Music Room for years 4-6 students, supervised by Oval duty teacher
    • Room 12 for years 1-3 students who will be supervised by the Junior duty teacher or Admin.
    • Library will operate normally with the library duty teacher supervising.
    • Undercover Area will be supervised by the Middle duty teacher.
    • Lunchtime clubs (unless in Room 12 or Library) may continue.
    • Verandahs will be supervised by the Leadership Team.
  • Students should choose an area and remain there for the full 30 minute period.
  • Duty teachers should encourage students to conduct a quiet activity on verandahs and Undercover Area and not run around.
  • NO SPORTS EQUIPMENT IS TO GO OUT OF THE SPORTS SHED.
